WinCC OA rendezvous in the wine and gourmet city of Lyon

Already something of a tradition, this year the WinCC OA User Days were held on May 15 and 16 in Lyon. Over 250 participants took up the invitation to attend the 11th WinCC OA User Days, which showcased the latest developments from the world of the SIMATIC WinCC Open Architecture (WinCC OA) Scada system. Several WinCC OA partners presented reports on successfully implemented customer-specific solutions.

The two-day event offered users and partners alike another opportunity to gain an impression of the extensive scope offered by the Scada system WinCC OA. This year’s gathering was opened by local hosts Francois Gerin, Vice-President of Siemens France, and Thierry de Vanssay, Regional Director of Siemens Lyon. ETM CEO Bernhard Reichl offered an insight into the strategy of ETM professional control GmbH, which is part of the Siemens Group. Frank Baudach, Global Head of Product Management for SIMATIC Scada, talked about current strategy and the prospects for future development in the field of SIMATIC Scada over the coming years. Bernhard Staufer, Director of Sales & Marketing at ETM, presented a number of special projects implemented over the past year, and introduced the latest newcomers to the WinCC OA Solution Partner program.

Meeting of experts focuses on WinCC OA Version 3.13
The attention of the annual meeting of experts this year was focused on the new version of WinCC OA. WinCC OA Product Manager Lukas Schopp provided the participants with an outlook of the new features users may expect in Version 3.13. There will be a number of new core functions such as extended data handling and web reporting. Alongside further development of the Ultralight Client, the mobile app WinCC OA OPERATOR will also have a number of new functionalities to offer. The app will then also be offered in an iPad version. Alongside additional functions for the add-on video, Version 3.13 will also feature a number of new drivers. The new version is due to be unveiled at the SPS IPC Drives in November 2014 in Nuremberg.

Customer-specific solutions implemented by WinCC OA partners
Following on from this were presentations by international partners illustrating solutions and projects implemented using WinCC OA from the fields of energy supply, safety, tunnel and transport as well as building automation. During the breaks, participants had the opportunity to appraise the partner exhibits and find out more about some of the special solutions presented.

SIMATIC WinCC Open Architecture hands-on
The agenda for the second day included a number of workshops, from “Engineering Tools”, “Security and WinCC OA” and “Setting up redundant Oracle database mirroring” to “Standardization and ongoing innovation of large-scale systems with long-term prospects”.

In addition to the workshops, participants were also offered a unique opportunity to visit the Croix-Rousse Tunnel and the tunnel control center. Kitted out with bikes, the individual groups made their way through the 1.8 km long tunnel. Unusually, the tunnel has been designed to allow use by pedestrians, cyclists and electric vehicles. Lyon is also known for its annual Festival of Light, and fitting tribute has been paid to this yearly event with a permanent lighting installation in the form of artistic light animations adorning the walls of the tunnel, which met with an enthusiastic response from the visitors.

Final get-together over wine and gourmet French cuisine
An event staged in the wine and gourmet city of Lyon cannot pass without a convivial social gathering, and the supporting program for the WinCC OA Community was rounded off by an evening’s socializing at the Château de Saint Trys. Spurred on by excellent local wines, gourmet French cuisine and accordion music, the guests continued to develop contacts forged over the course of the event until late into the evening.

After two rewarding days, the WinCC OA User Days 2014 in Lyon drew to a successful close. Many of the participants were already eagerly asking for details of the User Days 2015. Planning for next year’s event is already under way.
